Lockwood on State of the State
DENVER, Colo.—Jonathan Lockwood, who is running to lead the Colorado Republican Party released the following statement on the State of the State:
“Colorado ranks 50th in the nation for rebounding from Covid-induced unemployment. Let’s be clear, unemployment is not just a bad statistic for politicians, it is an indicator of economic suffering. Economic suffering is a trigger for mental health crises, societal unrest, crime and suicide. Gov. Jared Polis and his allies in the Legislature need to put aside partisan politics and the era of division, and work with Republicans. Lives and livelihoods are depending on them collaborating with Republicans.
“The Legislature’s preview of ‘fees and fines’ to help revive Colorado’s broken economy is neoliberal voodoo. Colorado Democrats could potentially jack up taxes on workers and everyday Coloradans, increase health care premiums, and continue to burden already ailing mom-and-pop businesses.
“Lawmakers and the governor need to restore Colorado’s obligations before making new promises. We should also be waiting until the March economic forecast comes out before committing to any large-scale plans. There is also no reason that we should be jeopardizing future economic security for short-term political gain for an elite few.
“People want to get the show on the road. They want their kids in school full-time, they want to work, they want to live their lives and have fulfilling livelihoods. The lack of imagination and problem solving on both sides of the aisle is rooted in a reactive pattern in politics of failing to rise above the crisis at hand.
“We cannot be too rosy about the state of the state, but Coloradans are creative, we are tough. We have every ability to rebuild Colorado, but we need leadership and for those with power, privilege and position to remember why they are in their roles: to work for the benefit of all Coloradans.”
